McCloskey Delivery Inspection: A 5-Step Quality Checklist
You just bought a McCloskey. Maybe it's a J50v2 jaw crusher, an R230 screener, or a stacker for your sand and gravel operation. Good machines, I've reviewed enough of them to say that. But don't sign the delivery paperwork until you've given the unit a proper look. Give it an hour. You'll get that hour back the first time it saves you from a warranty fight.
I'm a quality compliance manager for a heavy equipment dealer. I review units before they reach customers, about 200 a year across multiple brands. In 2024, I flagged or rejected almost 8% of first deliveries because something didn't match the spec. Wrong hydraulic motors. Undersized tires. A missing emergency-stop guard. One unit almost left with the wrong conveyor belt entirely.
People think you pay more for the McCloskey name. Actually, the price follows the build quality. Operators come back because the machines hold up. The logo isn't the reason for the price. The reliability is.
Here's the checklist I use when a McCloskey shows up. Five steps. Most take under five minutes.
Step 1: Compare the Build Sheet to the Machine in Front of You
Get the production order, not the brochure. The brochure describes the platform. The production order describes your machine, every option the plant actually installed.
- Model and serial number. Match them against the chassis plate. Sounds dumb, but model mix-ups happen at the dealer level.
- Engine hours. A new unit should show single digits. Double digits means it was run somewhere else.
- Options you paid for. Hydraulic overtrack magnets, dust suppression, remote control. Verify each one works, not just that it's bolted in place.
- Hopper configuration. In late 2024, McCloskey changed the J50v2's feed hopper. If you ordered after November, confirm you got the updated wear package. It's a difference in liner thickness you can measure.
The spec sheet isn't gospel. I've seen a "new" machine arrive with the previous customer's mud still on the tires. That raised a few questions. The dealer didn't have good answers.
Step 2: Inspect the McCloskey Motors
Here's the thing: most people walk the frame, kick the tires, and never open the engine enclosure. The motors are where I find the most problems.
McCloskey motors are mostly hydraulic drives across the crusher and stacker line. On a new or used unit, I check:
- Oil levels on every hydraulic motor. A motor that's low at delivery was either leaking in transit or topped up wrong at the plant.
- Fitting leaks. Run your hand under each fitting. A film of oil is a red flag. A drip on a new machine is a deal-breaker.
- Mount bolts. Loose mounts cause belt and chain wear. I torque-check the main drive motor mounts on every unit.
- Couplers. Test every quick-coupler, not just the ones you plan to use. They seize from sitting, and a seized coupler on site is a $600 service call.
I once caught a machine delivered with the wrong hydraulic motor, a lower-flow model than specified. Actually, that one wasn't a McCloskey, it was a competitor. But the lesson applies to every brand. The dealer said it would "run fine." It ran, but at 70% of rated stacking height. Three weeks later they swapped it under warranty. The customer lost a month of production.
Eddie, a quarry owner in Ohio, caught a similar issue on a McCloskey screener in 2023. A hydraulic leak the dealer called "normal." Eddie rejected the unit on the spot. When I looked at the photos later, the fitting was cross-threaded. Not normal. If the dealer's story doesn't match what your eyes see, trust your eyes.
When I'm not confident about a motor spec, I reach out to Keith McCloskey, a service manager who's been working the McCloskey line for over a decade. He knows which serial numbers had which teething issues, and he's straight with me when something is a known weak point.
Step 3: Tires vs Michelin — Checking Wheeled Units
If you bought a wheeled stacker or a wheeled crusher, you'll hear the tire question eventually: should you switch to Michelin?
Michelin makes excellent mining and construction tires. The X-Force and X-TL lines are well-regarded, and on the right application they're a genuine upgrade. But the question isn't "is Michelin good?" It's "is Michelin right for the ground you work on?"
- Load rating. The tire placard on the machine shows the factory spec. Compare it to the machine's working load, not the empty weight.
- Ply rating. Rocky or soft ground means you need more ply. On hard, level ground, heavy tires just cost you fuel and ride comfort.
- Clearance at full height. Oversized tires can rub the frame when the machine is raised. I've seen this on aftermarket upgrades, and the rubbing damage isn't covered by warranty.
Bottom line: if you move the plant around the quarry a few times a month, factory tires are fine. If you're towing on public roads or working in soft ground, a Michelin casing pays for itself over time.
But don't take my word for the heavy stuff. I'm a quality guy, not a tire engineer. When tire selection actually matters, I bring in someone who specs tires for a living. The specialist will ask about your terrain, travel distances, and load cycles. That's information a salesman won't volunteer.
Step 4: Run It Under Load Before You Sign
This is the step most people skip. They fire up the engine, move the conveyor, call it good. That's not a test.
- Feed for at least an hour with the material you'll actually process. Not gravel when you'll be crushing granite.
- Watch conveyor tracking under load. Belts track differently empty vs loaded. If it drifts, you'll be adjusting it every shift.
- Check screen box vibration. The stroke should be consistent across the box. A lazy screen usually means a bearing issue or an out-of-balance shaft.
- Monitor hydraulic temperature after 30 minutes. A spike past normal means a restriction or a worn pump.
Alexander, a site foreman on a highway job, accepted three stackers that looked perfect in a dry run. Under load, two of them had belt tracking problems that needed aftermarket guide rollers. The dealer covered the fix, but the units were down three weeks. A load test at delivery would have caught both.
If you can't load-test at delivery, at least run the machine long enough to bring the oil to operating temperature. Then re-check the fittings. Cold oil hides leaks. Hot oil shows them.
Step 5: Verify the Paperwork Before the Driver Leaves
Boring, but do it while the truck is still there:
- EPA Tier 4 Final emission certification. Match the engine serial number on the cert to the machine. Mismatches happen more than you'd think.
- MSHA approval if the unit will go underground. That's a separate certification from the standard sale, and it's easy to miss.
- Warranty registration. Check the start date. A backdated registration means lost coverage for you.
- Manuals. At least one set in a language your operators can read. Sounds obvious. You'd be surprised.
People treat emissions paperwork as a legal formality. It's actually a quality document. A machine with the wrong emission configuration will fail inspection in most jurisdictions, which is a quality failure by any definition. McCloskey's plant runs ISO 9001:2015, so they track this stuff. But "they track it" doesn't mean "it arrived correct." Check it.
What Most People Miss
Three things I've personally burned myself on:
1. Hydraulic oil cleanliness. New machines have break-in wear, some metal in the filters is expected. Metallic particles in the oil, not so much. In my first year, I accepted a unit without doing an oil analysis. The hydraulic pump failed 40 hours later. The $3,000 oil test would have caught it. Now I check the oil on every delivery, and I'm not polite about sending it to the lab.
2. Torque on the jaw plate bolts. If you bought a crusher, get a torque wrench on the jaw plates after the first 50 hours. Loose plates cause cracking, and the repair runs $15,000 or more. It's a 20-minute check that takes a big line item off your risk list.
3. Travel height. Verify the machine clears your site's overhead obstructions in both road-ready and operational positions. I watched a stacker hit a power line because nobody checked the travel position. Nobody was hurt, but it was a six-figure mistake that a tape measure would have prevented.
Know What You Don't Know
I've been in this role for years and reviewed hundreds of units. But I'm a quality inspector, not a diesel mechanic, not a tire engineer, and not an electrical specialist. When something looks off in those areas, I say so and bring in someone who actually knows.
The vendors I trust most are the ones who tell me when something isn't their strength, and point me to someone who does it better. That honesty is worth more than a vendor who promises everything. Experts who understand their own boundaries are more reliable, not less.
